In a tragic turn of events, the Sonoma County community is grappling with the death of one teenager and the frantic search for another young boy, both victims of the treacherous currents of the Russian River. According to the Sonoma Sheriff’s Office, the body of the teenager was discovered Saturday morning after emergency services received a 911 call on April 11, reporting two teenagers being swept into the river.
The initial search on Thursday led to one teenager being self-rescue and transported to a local hospital, while efforts to find the missing 10-year-old boy, carried out by a fleet of emergency personnel, were forced to continue into Friday. As the search progressed, the use of a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) operated by Napa County's Sheriff’s Office succeeded in locating the deceased teenager.
The search for the younger boy persists, with multiple agencies and local residents holding on to hope. Describing the situation, a Sonoma County battalion chief emphasized the challenges, "The water is moving fast. It is still at a high level. If you are not an experienced swimmer, you should not swim in the Russian River at this time," said Shawn Johnson, pointing out the hazardous conditions.
As operations unfold to locate the boy, Sonoma County Sheriff's spokesperson Rob Dillion offered a glimmer of possibility, saying, "We hold out hope he’s on a sandbar or holding onto a branch or possibly came out of the river and is trying to walk back from somewhere," demonstrating the continued efforts despite the reality of the situation. Amidst the search, the community has been asked to steer clear of Steelhead Beach to aid in the search efforts, providing a clearer path for the involved rescue teams.
