The Southside seniors of Bexar County have a reason to look forward to 2025, as their beloved South San Civic Center is set to receive a $750,000 facelift. The funding, announced on Tuesday, is aimed largely at enhancing accessibility for the community's elderly population. According to the San Antonio Report, the renovations will include expanding the parking lot and adding features like wheelchair ramps and accessible restrooms.
The upgrade is a part of a broader initiative to improve local infrastructure, with Congressman Joaquin Castro securing these specific funds through the federal appropriations process. In total, Bexar County would stand to gain from a $12 million investment which will directly impact various community projects. Yet the most notable will perhaps be at the Civic Center, a venue where seniors congregate to socialize and engage in activities. Unfortunately, the dearth of accessible parking and the absence of ramps at the entrance pose daily challenges to its users, a situation the funds are earmarked to dramatically ameliorate.
At the unveiling of the financial boost, local seniors Isabel Reyes and Ofelia Lozano, who have spent eight and twelve years respectively at the civic center, were present to hear the good news. "We're here until 11 a.m. and it feels like it isn't enough time," Reyes told the San Antonio Report. "This is good for us to keep coming and spend good times here. We're chatting, we're hanging out."
Renovation plans were echoed by another source, with News 4 San Antonio reporting that the senior haven would not just to get ramps and handrails, but also see a major overhaul of its restrooms, establishing a more inclusive environment not just for today's seniors but also for all who will come after. According to the San Antonio Report, officials plan to keep the center running as long as possible during renovations, which are required to not shut down the center "until it has to."
As the elderly population leans on community gatherings for a life interconnected, the upgrades are anticipated to vastly improve the quality of life for the seniors of South San Antonio. The Civic Center serves primarily as a bilingual locale for daily social gatherings, along with city-sponsored senior nutrition programs on weekdays. Upgrades to the parking lot might include expanding across the street, with accessibility for everyone in mind, Bexar County parks director Ken McGlamery clarified in statements to the San Antonio Report. The civic center not only caters to social needs but also doubles as a rental venue for events like quinceañeras and weddings on weekends.
