A man suspected of an armed assault that left a woman injured earlier this month in Southeast Washington has been slapped with charges, police said. The Metropolitan Police Department cornered the suspect, Michael Owusu-Sakyi, who is 47 and from Southeast D.C., in connection with a daylight shooting that occurred on Fairlawn Avenue.
On April 5, MPD officers swarmed the 1700 block after a gunshot victim was found around 9:45 a.m., according to officials, the victim, an adult female, was whisked away to a hospital to mend from her injuries, which, luckily, weren't deemed life-threatening. Just days later, on Tuesday, Owusu-Sakyi's run from justice ended when cops acting on a D.C. Superior Court warrant took him into custody, all this according to a release on the police department's website.
The suspect is now facing a charge of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (gun), the cops said, reflecting the grave nature of the accusations rooted in gun violence that plagues the community streets. The swift police response and subsequent arrest highlight efforts to curb the spate of shootings rattling District neighborhoods.
Details about what led up to the shooting or the circumstances surrounding it were scarce, though MPD is likely sifting through evidence to piece together the moments that led up to the trigger being pulled, while the community breathes a collective sigh of relief with Owusu-Sakyi behind bars, at least for now, many wonder about the long-term solutions to the bloodshed that seems all too common.
