Long Beach has been gripped by a tragic tale of violence that reached its climax when police nabbed 41-year-old Ahmed Mahmoud for the alleged murder of Nelson Martinez Gonzalez. The 30-year-old was fatally shot on Gaviota Avenue on April 14, a statement by the Long Beach Police Department confirmed.

The LBPD has been tight-lipped about the nitty-gritty but disclosed that Mahmoud is facing a slew of charges including murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and illegal firearms possession, his bail punching in at a hefty $3.1 million, according to the official release. Detectives are digging deep and are expected to hand the case to the L.A. County District Attorney's Office for evaluation.

On the fateful evening, officers dashed to the scene following reports of a shooting, where they found Gonzalez with a critical gunshot wound. Despite valiant attempts by both the officers and Long Beach Fire Department personnel, Gonzalez's injuries proved fatal after hospital transport, the LBPD reported.

Moments after the crime, a high-speed chase unfolded after police spotted, and subsequently tried to stop a suspect vehicle which failed to yield. After a short but intense pursuit, police nabbed the driver who, turned out to be Mahmoud, for an unrelated outstanding warrant. His connection to the killing was uncertain at first, but he was later charged with Gonzalez's murder.
