Suspected Drug Trafficker Caught with Arsenal of Illegal Substances, Firearms Near PetalumaSource: Sonoma Sheriff's Office

A routine traffic stop on Highway 37 escalated into a significant drug bust this Tuesday, with Sonoma County Sheriff's detectives nabbing a suspect for a cache of illegal substances and firearms. The apprehension of 44-year-old Gerardo Carcano near Lakeville Highway outside Petaluma turned from a standard procedure into an interdict of methamphetamine, heroin, and potential fentanyl-laced narcotics.

Carcano was pulled over around 4:30 pm, whereupon detectives, accompanied by a canine unit, became suspicious of the vehicle's contents, according to a release by the Sonoma Sheriff's Office. The subsequent search unveiled an armory of drugs disguised in resealed food packaging, including approximately 3 pounds of methamphetamine, seven ounces of heroin, and one ounce of ecstasy suspected of being laced with fentanyl. Also in the possession of Carcano was a loaded .38 special revolver.

The Sheriff's Office confirmed that the seized items were packaged to dodge detection but did not escape the trained nose of the K-9 unit. Deputy Public Information Officer Rob Dillion prepared the statement on Carcano's arrest, listing numerous felony narcotics and firearms violations that will be levied against the suspect.

Carcano now faces multiple felony charges, including the transportation and possession of a controlled substance for sale, as well as being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. Initially set at $30,000, Carcano's bail received a steep augmentation following the extent of his alleged offenses, climbing to a quarter-million. Details on the case can be acquired by contacting the media inquiries line, the Sheriff's Office indicated.
