Philadelphia's streets became the stage for another unusual theft when thieves made off with massive amounts of meat from a parked tractor-trailer. According to CBS News Philadelphia, the heist happened in Northeast Philadelphia, where suspects managed to pilfer two pallets of pork as the truck driver slept in his cab. The culprits fled in a Lexus, leaving authorities to investigate another peculiar crime in the city's latest food thefts.
Loaded with goods, the trailer was stationed on the 2800 block of East Charter Road as the driver awaited the next day's delivery to a business. During this brief respite in the cab, disturbed by the shaking of the truck, the driver realized the theft unfolding. Currently, the suspects remain at large with no descriptions available and authorities haven't made any arrests, FOX29 reports.
This is not Philadelphia's first brush with meat marauders. Past incidents include a heist last November when boxes of beef were stealthily lifted from the back of a truck near Lincoln Financial Field. With this latest incident, the city's tally marks at least 37 reported cargo thefts this year, totaling thousands of dollars in lost commodities. "They are asleep in a lot of cases. The refrigerated trucks make a lot of noise," Captain Jack Ryan of the Philadelphia Police Dept explained in a 6abc interview.
To combat these nocturnal nuisances, some truckers like Mark Leighton are taking matters into their own hands by employing 'meat locks.' With imposing tools required to remove them, these devices represent the truckers’ fight back against the burgeoning threat. "In order to cut it off, you have to have a massive tool," Leighton told 6abc.
