An alarming assault at Ann Arbor Golf and Outing Club has led to charges against two individuals, a 19-year-old and a 13-year-old boy, following the alleged sexual assault of a 39-year-old woman, as The Detroit News reported. The attack took place on November 4 last year while a football game between the University of Michigan and Purdue was underway.
The 19-year-old suspect, Jarrell Childs of Detroit, was arraigned via video in a 14A-1 District Court, charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct, assault with intent to commit serious bodily harm, and larceny, including stealing a financial transaction device without consent, his bond was set at $75,000, and he remains at the Washtenaw County Jail, FOX 2 Detroit informed their readers. Ann Arbor police have alleged that the sexual assault by Childs and the minor did not know the victim prior to the attack.
Lt. Bonnie Theil, a long-serving Ann Arbor Police officer, expressed her shock about the nature of the crime, telling FOX 2 Detroit that she had never seen a crime like this in her 24 years of service, and the assailants forcibly removed the woman's clothes and at one point strangled her, causing a temporary loss of consciousness. A break in the case came when the victim's credit card, stolen during the assault, was used at a Detroit party store, allowing detectives to secure surveillance footage of the transaction.
University of Michigan student Norah Tisko shared with FOX 2 Detroit her fear for campus safety in the wake of the incident saying, "I’m definitely more vigilant, I never walk alone so that’s has not changed and won’t change but definitely being more hyper vigilant about things where I am."
Authorities were ultimately able to identify the suspects via surveillance footage and DNA evidence, according to an assistant prosecutor quoted by WWJ Newsradio.
The juvenile, who was charged with criminal sexual conduct in the first degree among other counts, is detained at the Washtenaw County Juvenile Detention Center, while Childs faces a series of serious allegations that could carry significant sentences, no 10% of the bond could work to maintain him in custody until his trial.
