The protracted battle for accountability following the Robb Elementary shooting has taken a severe turn as Daniel Chapin, the stalwart founder of the Uvalde Foundation For Kids continues his hunger strike for the seventeenth consecutive day; however, this act of protest has not been without consequence to his well-being, for Chapin has now been hospitalized due to heart complications derived from his fasting vigil as he demands the removal of three Uvalde Police Officers faulted for their response to the tragic event, said a report by KENS 5.
The personal sacrifice of Chapin has yet to move city and police officials into dialogue, with no formal communication received despite consistent updates from the foundation regarding the hunger strike and yet, even from his hospital bed, he remains undeterred vowing to continue until action is taken; the three officers in question, Javier Martinez, Louis Landry, and Eduardo Canales, have been criticized for their handling of the Robb Elementary shooting, yet they were exonerated by an independent report leading to greater furor and energizing the foundation's resolve, according to KENS 5.
The outcry for change has been reverberating through the Uvalde community, with Brett Cross, a kin of one of the victims and an advocate for gun safety, staging a sit-out at Uvalde Police headquarters, mirroring the foundation's call for the ousting of the same police officers and refusing to leave until his demands for justice are fulfilled."Our foundation is not surprised by the failures, cover-ups & distraction techniques used by the Uvalde Police department to avoid taking true responsibility, since that day in Uvalde. We are not surprised because it is the system itself in place which is broken at the highest levels. We have, however, become increasingly angered as we have watched mothers & fathers such as Brett continue to reach for hope within a system that increasingly has made promises and failed to follow through on them. The foundation joins Brett & the families in calling for the removal of these officers & a move toward some true accountability," Chapin announced.
