A Warren man faces multiple charges after being accused of striking a man with his truck and then fleeing the state, authorities said. Tony Prather, 48, allegedly left the victim, whom he had earlier given a ride home from a local bar, critically injured in the road. He was extradited to Michigan to face charges, the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office confirmed.
On the fateful night of Feb. 23, after stopping at a Warren bar, Prather is said to have dropped the victim at his house before committing the hit-and-run. "Fleeing the scene after allegedly causing serious injury is a cowardly act that will not go unpunished," Prosecutor Peter Lucido was quoted in ClickOnDetroit. "Regardless of where the individual attempts to hide, we will ensure they are brought back to face the consequences of their actions. There is no escape from accountability."
According to the details released, Prather has been arraigned on assault with intent to murder, operating a vehicle with a suspended license, causing serious injury, and as a habitual fourth offender. If released, Prather would be required to don a steel cuff GPS tether and be barred from contacting the victim or leaving Michigan, as per conditions set by the district court. His bond was set at $350,000 cash/surety, with no 10% option.
The victim, despite the brutal encounter, has been reported to be in critical condition but expected to survive. Prather's decision to leave Michigan after the incident led to his recent extradition, with court documents indicating that he went before a judge last week in the 37th Warren District Court, according to FOX 2 Detroit. The probable cause hearing is set for May 16, where Prather will face the legal repercussions of his actions.
