A D.C. man faces serious charges for the brutal slaying of a visiting teacher on a college campus last summer. Jamie Macedo, 22, was indicted earlier this week on charges of first-degree murder while armed, attempted armed robbery, and various firearms offenses in connection with the death of Maxwell Emerson, according to an announcement from United States Attorney Matthew M. Graves.
Macedo, alleged to have committed the crime near the Brookland-CUA Metro Station, was approached by the indictment just days before with charges that include possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The accused is expected to answer to these charges, having been arraigned this Friday, on April 12.
According to court documents and the prosecution's evidence, Emerson, who was in the capital to attend a conference at the Library of Congress's Teacher Institute, faced a grim finale to his trip on July 5, 2023. At approximately 7:32 a.m., surveillance footage showed Macedo confronting Emerson just outside the metro station, threatening him with a firearm. Minutes later, the visiting teacher was seen walking away, hands raised in surrender, and in a moment captured by the still eyes of cameras, Macedo drove him towards an area near 611 Alumni Lane.
Last moments, penned in desperation, saw Emerson send a snapchat message indicating he was being robbed at gunpoint just before 8 a.m. The situation escalated to violence when Macedo, captured on surveillance attempting to snatch Emerson's possession, shot him in the abdomen during a tussle on a park bench, as asserted by the U.S. Attorney's Office. Emerson did not survive the gunshot wound.
The Metropolitan Police Department continues its investigation into the matter, as Assistant U.S. Attorney John Interrante leads the prosecution, working to unravel the narrative of a morning that turned tragic in an instant. More details on the indictment and the case against Macedo can be found on the U.S. Attorney's Office website.
