Three individuals were rushed to a hospital following a violent outburst at a Los Angeles County supermarket, where they sustained gunshot wounds during what turned a robbery attempt. The incident took place at the Super King Market in Claremont on Friday night, as confirmed by authorities. Police disclosed that the assailant, Michael Abeyta, age 27, from Pomona stormed into the supermarket with intentions of robbery, leading to three victims being shot.
The mayhem erupted around 5:10 p.m. at the market, situated at 436 Auto Center Drive. The Claremont Police Department swung into action but the suspect had already fled the scene by the time officers arrived. According to KTLA, the injured parties were taken to a local hospital and found to be in stable condition. Detectives were able to pinpoint the suspect with the aid of witness accounts and surveillance footage.
In a coordinated effort with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, Abeyta was detected and apprehended while walking on the 100 block of Meredith Avenue. Recovered evidence included clothing items and a handgun hidden under a vehicle at a neighboring business, which are believed to have been used in the crime, as stated by Claremont Police Department's Lieutenant Jason Walters. "Officers located evidence, which included the suspect's clothing and a handgun, which were believed to be used during the crime," Walters said in a statement obtained by CBS News Los Angeles.
Abeyta is now facing charges including assault with a deadly weapon, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and criminal threats of robbery with bail set at $2 million. Investigators also uncovered an accomplice in the heinous act, Amanda Soto, aged 37, from Pomona. She was arrested on charges of robbery and for an active warrant, and she is currently being held on $125,000 bail. The investigation into the shooting continues as law enforcement seeks to piece together the events that led to this night of terror at Claremont's Super King Market.
