An intense showdown erupted on a desert highway when an Arizona murder suspect unleashed a hail of bullets on San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputies last Thursday night. The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Brent Phillip Soster, was eventually subdued and taken into custody following a sequence of dangerous events that could have turned deadly for those in pursuit.
According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department's report, deputies were notified by the Mohave County, Arizona, Sheriff’s Department of Soster's whereabouts after he was spotted in the Needles area. By 9:26 p.m., Soster's 2005 Dodge pickup was located by deputies on Highway 95. The attempted traffic stop quickly escalated when Soster fled, sparking a high-speed chase that ended on Highway 62 near Twentynine Palms.
During the pursuit, Soster reportedly threw a smoke grenade from his vehicle and began firing at the deputies. A Sheriff’s Aviation Division helicopter joined in, and Soster opened fire at it, prompting what officials described as a lethal force encounter. Despite the potentially fatal altercation, deputies managed to apprehend Soster without any injuries to law enforcement personnel. Soster himself was taken to a hospital for treatment of lacerations before being booked for attempted murder.
Investigators from the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division later recovered a cache of dangerous items from Soster’s truck, including firearms, a tactical ballistic vest, a gas mask, smoke grenades, and plenty of ammunition. Deputy Joshua Young of the Specialized Investigations Division, who can be reached at (909) 890-4904, is leading the inquiry into these events. Soster is now detained at the West Valley Detention Center as he faces charges that have deeply rattled the local community. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department is urging anyone who might have insights into the case to help piece together this dangerous puzzle that unfolded under the dark desert sky.
