In the early hours of May 27, vandals struck the quaint community of Sugarloaf in Big Bear, leaving a scene of destruction in their wake, as approximately 22 vehicles were defaced with spray paint and blighted by punctured tires, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department. The rash of felony vandalism concentrated on the 400 block of Spruce Lane, has shocked residents, prompting an investigation by local deputies who arrived on the scene at 7:47 a.m. that day after receiving reports of the senseless damage.
The targeted cars bore the random markings of letters "Z, T, W, J" in black and pink paint, a cryptic message left by the unidentified perpetrators, the vehicles weren't just tarnished with graffiti but also had their tires methodically punctured as the police observed additional vandalism at the nearby intersection of Barton Lane and Spruce Lane, the chaos presumably unfolded between the quiet hours of 3:00 and 5:00 a.m. when most of the town slept unaware. As the community reels from the brazen attack on personal property, authorities are piecing together the mystery, urging anyone with information to step forward and help bring the vandals to justice.
The Big Bear Sheriff Station is heading the investigation, with Deputy A. Milligan on the helm, and calls for public assistance in the case; locals are encouraged to provide any relevant tips by contacting the station directly, or, for those wishing to remain anonymous, the We-Tip Hotline is available—a statement on the Sheriff-Coroner Department website states. Case numbers associated with the incidents range from 062400371 to 062400389, and Sheriff-Coroner Shannon D. Dicus has put forth a collective effort to unravel the motivations behind the defacement and destruction that tainted the peaceful mountain community.
