A Canton Township man has been slapped with felony charges after he was holed up in a standoff with cops that stretched nearly a full day, authorities said. The man, identified as 39-year-old Scott Earl Hoover, is accused of barracading himself in his home with a handgun during a domestic dispute.
Officers were dispatched to the house on Annapolis Circle about 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8 after reports of domestic violence, where they discovered Hoover armed and alone inside the home. The ClickOnDetroit reported he had fired the gun outside before retreating into the house, prompting the police to secure the area and confirm a felony assault.
According to a Detroit News release from the police, negotiators and officers worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of the neighborhood and the suspect during the tense 17-hour incident that ended the following morning. Hoover was persuaded to meet with police negotiators on Thursday, May 9, and was taken into custody without incident.
Hoover faced the judge in Plymouth’s 35th District Court on Monday, May 11, where he was arraigned on several charges. According to Hometownlife, he's been charged with felonious assault, a four-year felony; felony firearm, a two-year felony; reckless use of a firearm, a 90-day misdemeanor; and domestic violence, a 93-day misdemeanor. Judge James Plakas set Hoover’s bond at $20,000 with a 10% provision for release.
"The successful resolution of this incident without any injuries is a direct result of the professionalism, training, and restraint shown by our team," Police Chief Chad Baugh said in a statement obtained by the Detroit News. Hoover is scheduled for another court appearance on Friday, May 17, to respond to charges that have ensnared him in the legal net following the dramatic standoff.
