In a horrific incident at a Cypress hotel, a man has been charged with the heinous act of killing a four-month-old puppy. Richard Benjamin Tolliver, 27, is accused of strangling and drowning the young female Golden Retriever in a bathtub, an act that firefighters discovered after being called to extinguish a Bible set ablaze by Tolliver, authorities report.
Orange County prosecutors have slapped Tolliver with a felony animal cruelty charge. He could face up to three years in lock-up, and a $20,000 fine if the court finds him guilty, according to a press release issued by the Orange County District Attorney's Office. After firefighters subdued the fire on May 6, Tolliver was taken to a local medical center before the cuffs went on for suspicion of animal mistreatment.
Tolliver, who has entered a not-guilty plea, remains behind bars, his bail set at $5,000. The district attorney, Todd Spitzer, conveyed the gravity of the situation, stating, "The loyalty and unwavering love of a dog makes the cruelty inflicted on a defenseless animal even more heartbreaking. Violence of any kind against animals will not be tolerated and we will prosecute those who inflict harm on animals to the fullest extent of the law."
Dogs, long known for their fidelity and affectionate nature, are often considered part of the family, and the act of suffocating and drowning a defenseless puppy has sent shock waves through the community. The case falls under the watchful eye of Deputy District Attorney Michael Chay from the Consumer and Environmental Protection Unit. The community, and indeed the law, watches on, waiting for justice to be served in a case that challenges the bounds of humanity and cruelty.
