In a firm stand against the Downey City Council's decision to no longer fly the Pride Flag on city property, LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn is set to host a flag-raising ceremony this Monday at the local County Office of Education. "The Downey City Council made its choice, but LA County chooses inclusion," Hahn stated, ensuring that Pride Month will be celebrated in Downey with or without the city council's endorsement.
The move comes after a controversial vote by the Downey City Council that has sparked discussion amongst residents and officials. Despite the council's decision, a message of solidarity and inclusion is being sent by the county with the event, scheduled to take place on June 3 at 10 am. The event is open to the public, with speakers including Mayor Mario Trujillo and Los Angeles County Assessor Jeffrey Prang joining Supervisor Hahn.
The flag-raising ceremony represents a broader commitment by the LA County Board of Supervisors to recognize and support the LGBTQ+ community. Being held at 9300 Imperial Highway, Downey, the ceremony will also feature Equality California President Juan Camacho, with entertainer Jewels serving as Mistress of Ceremonies.
For those interested in covering the event, media inquiries are directed to Liz Odendahl. Last year, Hahn, along with Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, led the unanimous decision by the Board of Supervisors to hoist the Progress Pride Flag at all County facilities throughout June. This pledge includes eight County facilities in Downey, which will unfurl the Pride flag next month, in defiance of the city council's stance.
