The City of Detroit is taking a major leap forward in revitalizing its historic Coleman A. Young International Airport (KDET) through a transformative partnership with Avflight. This marks the first major initiative in five decades to rejuvenate the inner-city airfield, ushering in a new chapter for Detroit's aviation landscape, according to a statement obtained by Detroit's government website.
Following the Federal Aviation Administration's green light last year for a 20-year airport development and strategy design plan, KDET is set to apply for federal funding earmarked for infrastructure upgrades. The city has shown its vote of confidence in Avflight, the airport's sole service provider, by offering them a substantial 30-year lease – an unprecedented move in the airport's long history. Avflight is slated to begin construction this summer on a new 3,000-square-foot terminal and an adjacent 15,000-square-foot heated hangar, as detailed on DetroitMI.gov.
"There is so much potential at the Coleman A. Young International Airport, and after several years of hard work, residents and visitors alike will begin to see signs of the enormous change to come as Avflight kicks off construction this summer," Brad Dick, Detroit's Chief Operating Officer, told DetroitMI.gov. Avflight, which has been providing KDET with essential flight operation services such as fueling and hangar services, plans to play a pivotal role in improving airport amenities and operations.
With a recent $350,000 LED taxi lighting upgrade complete and a $3.5 million runway renovation, the airport continues its trajectory upwards. Looking forward, the city has announced further improvements including a new control tower set for construction in 2026, a beautification initiative, and enhanced snow removal capabilities. Additionally, the airport intends to establish partnerships with local educational and community organizations to launch programs for Detroit residents, hoping to return the Davis Aerospace Technical High School back to the airfield, as reported by DetroitMI.gov.
The airport is a critical transport hub not only for commerce but for providing a wealth of public services, including Certified Aircraft Rescue Firefighting (ARFF), Civil Air Patrol, and operations for the Detroit Police Department's aviation unit.
