A tragic incident unfolded in Farmington Hills over the weekend where a 40-year-old man was fatally mauled by a dog, believed to be a pit bull mix, in his backyard. The distressing scene was discovered on Saturday evening when a family member, concerned after not hearing from the victim all day, went to check on him. According to CBS Detroit, upon arrival at the home on Elmgrove Street, the relative found the man unconscious, with the dog pulling at his body.
Farmington Hills police responded to the scene around 8 p.m. and found the victim with severe bite wounds. The man was given first aid before being taken to Corewell Hospital in Farmington Hills, where he, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy later classified the death as accidental by dog mauling.
The dog has since been turned over to Oakland County Animal Control. Efforts are now being made to uncover any former signs of aggression in the animal and to ascertain whether it could have been identified as "dangerous or potentially dangerous," as laid out by Farmington Hills City Ordinance. "Investigators are working with family members to determine if the dog had any previous history of aggression," according to a release reported by clickondetroit.
This deadly attack comes in the wake of another recent local incident where a 1-year-old girl and her grandmother were attacked by two family pit bulls in their Wixom home, as per Patch. The Farmington Hills Police Department is requesting anyone with information about the case to contact them at 248-871-2610 in hopes of preventing further such tragedies.
