The FBI has issued a Public Service Announcement (PSA) after unmasking the ordeal of a Chinese student, known only as Benjamin, who fell prey to this malicious racket. According to a video released by the FBI, Benjamin was manipulated into transferring a hefty sum to a Hong Kong bank, forced to sever contacts, and to live under tight surveillance in a different city.
In a statement obtained by the FBI, Benjamin recounted how the perpetrators made him to "transfer a lot of money" and cut off all communications, leaving him under constant watch. The saga reached a turning point when his family, having reported him missing, led the FBI to his hideout in another city. The extent of the scam stretches far, with the FBI believing many more victims have not yet stepped forward. Students found themselves ensnared in a trap, having to turn over their electronic devices to purported authorities and keeping their predicament from their loved ones.
These offenses against students from abroad strike a resonant chord with the tribulations many face when establishing a life in unfamiliar territory. With a tenacity for deceit, scammers exploit vulnerabilities inherent in the diasporic journey, leveraging fabricated legal threats to intimidate their victims.
