The tides have swiftly turned for the former Round Rock Independent School District (RRISD) police chief. Dennis Weiner has been effectively stripped of his badge following a tumultuous stint marked by allegations of a "toxic" and "hostile" work environment. This development arrives amid multiple investigations into both his conduct and the police leadership under his watch, according to reports by KXAN and KVUE.
The series of events unfolded when Weiner was first placed on administrative leave last week, just before his contract was due to lapse. It has been months since an external investigation found the former chief's department to be ridden with issues so severe that they had to publicly call it out. Records also revealed that the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) investigated RRISD's police leadership in 2023 and found evidence of lapses in licensing, as reported by KXAN.
Weiner, who previously served Palm Beach County School District's police force before his Texas tenure, found himself embroiled in controversy over the handling of various incidents, including an alleged delay in reporting a sexual assault. A letter he penned to the district's superintendent, which surfaced on Facebook last week, put the district's officials in the hot seat for their supposed inaction. Nevertheless, RRISD Board President Amber Feller Landrum was quick to clarify, telling KVUE, "The content of Mr. Weiner's letter inaccurately represents personnel matters and an incident involving minors."
As the district grappled with these allegations, a separate report by a third-party investigator, Patricia Lineras, who cost the district $15,000, outlined a litany of allegations, including favoritism and miscommunication, as obtained by KXAN in the investigation report. The RRISD was forced to quickly pivot on its leadership, confirming that Weiner is no longer employed with the district, leaving the department under the interim leadership of Lauren Griffith, according to KVUE.
In response to the whirlwind of reports, RRISD released a statement saying, "Our commitment to the safety and well being of our students has never wavered." This comes as a small comfort to a community shaken by the recent disclosures, but the promise remains that the RRISD will firmly adhere to applicable laws and district policies in addressing any incidents involving students.
