East Austin welcomed the groundbreaking of Seabrook Square II, a project that promises to bring 60 new units of permanent supportive housing to the area. According to the City of Austin Housing Department, the development at 2210 Pershing Drive is aimed to cater to individuals struggling with homelessness and affordability issues in the community. In a statement captured by the department's press release, Interim Director Mandy DeMayo expressed, "We are delighted to help build an amenity- and services-rich, and conscious community."
The project, breaking ground with considerable fanfare, featured remarks from various local leaders and stakeholders. Ensuring personal stories and aspirations for a brighter community future was front and center, the event highlighted the progress toward addressing the city's homelessness crisis. David Gray, the City of Austin Homeless Strategy Officer, expressed the deeper significance behind the initiative, telling the crowd, "Seabrook Square II is more than just another housing development - it is a grand testament that our collective holistic unwavering commitment to making homeless rare brief and non-recurring, provides a safe haven and creates a nurturing community for those who have too long been marginalized."
Funding for the development has been pooled from a variety of sources, as reported by the City of Austin. Contributions include $1.697 million from 2022 General Obligation Bonds, Travis County's $10.685 million injection, the $5.181 million Downtown Density Bonus Program, and a $1 million chunk from HOME ARPA funding. Integral to the success of Seabrook Square II will be the allocation of 60 local housing vouchers, crucial in directing resources to those in need.
Integral Care, a partner in the project, highlights the human aspect behind the construction. CEO Jeff Richardson said, "Housing is more than four walls," reinforcing the notion that addressing health challenges such as mental illness, substance abuse, and chronic conditions starts with stable housing. The new facility, developed by Capital A Housing and poised for operation by Integral Care, will have a 40-year affordability period and features that respect the dignity and safety of individuals affected by trauma, violence, and homelessness. While touted as a remarkable collaboration, the actual completion of Seabrook Square II is set for a somewhat distant January 2026, with move-ins expected in March 2026.
The mission-oriented approach driven by the City of Austin and Travis County to erect over a thousand units of permanent supportive housing bears witness to the strength of community efforts, as Conor Kenny, a principal at Capital A Housing described. Collectively, the project joins hands with the local government and non-profit sectors to fulfill unique housing needs. Meanwhile, the design of the five-story building encompasses a single point of entry with ample amenities, including a private courtyard and laundry facilities, for the future residents who will soon call it home.
