Chaos erupted on the streets of Houston when a stolen car being pursued by police was involved in a series of collisions that ended with the tragic death of a 12-year-old boy. The incident, which took place on Westheimer Road around 10:15 p.m. Thursday night, saw a grey Hyundai Sonata—reported stolen—flee a collision and subsequently cause several more, culminating in the fatal crash.
The aftermath was a grisly scene with multiple vehicles including a silver Infiniti G37, a white Nissan Rogue, and a green Toyota Camry involved in the final pile-up that disabled the fleeing car. Inside were found four young suspects, all believed to be black males between the ages of 12 to 13. In the chaos, two were captured while two others fled, according to the City of Houston's official news release.
The juvenile who lost his life in this string of events has yet to be named, pending the delicate task of informing his family. Authorities released that the young man was found unresponsive at the scene and was declared deceased after being transported to the local hospital. "At approximately 10 p.m. a westside patrol officer witnessed a collision between two vehicles near the 12000 block of Richmond," detailed HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant E. Fendia and Officer A. Mares on the City of Houston's website.
Further investigation has shone a light on another unfortunate reality; it was confirmed that the vehicle had been taken without consent earlier in the same day. Adding to the turmoil, one of the suspects who attempted to avoid capture on foot was also taken to the hospital, having sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The pursuit, the crashes, and the resulting fatality have left yet more questions than answers—a sobering reminder of the prices that are paid in the pursuit of recklessness and the irrevocable cost of youth cut tragically short.
