An Illinois man has been sentenced to a hefty 17.5 years in prison for the chilling sexual exploitation of a 12-year-old girl from Michigan. Eduardo G. Torres, 26, of Waukegan, orchestrated this heinous act, meeting the girl online and luring her across state lines to where he subsequently assaulted her, as stated by U.S. Attorney Mark Totten.
According to the Detroit News, Torres met the victim through Snapchat and then drove her from Berrien Springs, Michigan, to his Illinois home to carry out the crime. The crime included filming the assault, which falls under the federal law's stern prohibition against child pornography.
Having pled guilty to sexual exploitation of a child on December 18, 2023, Torres was also hit with a five-year term of supervised release following his prison sentence, according to reports by U.S. District Judge Janet Neff. While Torres' attorney was unavailable for comment, the case has sounded alarm bells regarding the rising tide of child exploitation over the internet.
“As the sexual exploitation of children online continues to rise, my office is committed to protecting children and bringing sex offenders to justice,” Totten told reporters. The FBI's Cheyvoryea Gibson also highlighted the priority given to investigating those preying on children, praising the joint effort that led to Torres' capture and sentencing.
Officials are urging parents to ramp up vigilance over their children's online interactions, recommending open discussions about internet safety. The FBI has offered practical advice for concerned caregivers, including monitoring social media activities and educating kids on the dangers of online predators.
Torres's sentencing is part of a broader concerted effort by Project Safe Childhood, a program initiated by the Department of Justice, and dedicated to combating the increasing epidemic of child sexual exploitation.
