Los Angeles Police Department's bomb squad was called into action Wednesday evening after a stockpile of illegal fireworks was found during a search warrant in Gardena. The discovery was made at a home located on the 1600 block of W. 146th Street, reported FOXLA. The bust went down around 7 p.m., without incident, and it seems the neighborhood was kept out of harm's way.
Authorities have not disclosed the exact number of fireworks seized but confirmed that a "large quantity" was located in a garage behind the residence. Video footage captured by the Citizen App revealed the police's response, which stirred curiosity among nearby residents. One local, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed her astonishment to FOX 11, saying she was surprised to learn that such an arsenal was housed next to her.
As per the KTLA's coverage, the LAPD spokesperson confirmed that the discovery did not necessitate any evacuations and declared that there was no danger posed to the public. A bomb squad arrived on the scene in an armored vehicle to remove the fireworks safely, footage of which was made available to the public.
With Independence Day on the horizon, this isn't a lone event where authorities intercept illegal fireworks. An unfortunate incident three years ago during a botched detonation in South LA resulted in injuries and damage to properties. However, in this recent seizure by the LAPD, the fireworks have been successfully transported off-site, and as per CBS News Los Angeles, no arrests or injuries have been recorded.
