
Flames engulfed a two-story detached residence in Vermont Square, but thanks to the quick action of the Los Angeles Fire Department, the fire was put under control within 21 minutes. On the evening of May 18th, the LAFD responded to a report of a structure fire at a location on Budlong Avenue, initially identified as 4706 S Budlong, but later corrected to 4712 S Budlong Avenue according to the LAFD's update. A cadre of 36 firefighters was dispatched to the scene where an outside fire spread into the attic of an accessory dwelling unit, per the report.
The LAFD alert detailed that the firefighters had to access, confine, and fully extinguish the fire; fortunately, they managed to put it down without reporting any injuries, though the cause of the blaze remains under investigation. The response included several firefighting units, among them were engine companies, rescue ambulances, battalion chiefs, and squads familiar with navigating and mitigating structural fires of this nature, they adeptly maneuvered the situation.
The incident drew additional attention due to the nature of the structure, a characteristic residence over a garage - which posed a unique challenge as fires in such dwellings can rapidly spread. The adept response of the LAFD prevented what could have been a devastating event, underscoring the critical role our fire services play in urban safety. No injuries were reported in the official statement, highlighting the effectiveness of the firefighting team's response.
Investigative efforts are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire. Brian Humphrey, an LAFD spokesperson communicated that "No injury" was recorded and that fire officials were looking into how the incident occurred, the inquiry process is crucial to preventing future fires and ensuring the safety protocols are in place.
