A day of fishing took a tragic turn this weekend at Boerne City Lake when a man from Leon Springs drowned after entering the water to cool off, authorities reported.
The ill-fated plunge happened Saturday night with the Boerne Fire Department Water Rescue Team and the Texas Game Wardens responding to a 911 call just before 10:45 p.m., according to a city statement. The victim, whose identity has not yet been released, was fishing with companions who witnessed his distress but were unable to lend aid due to their inability to swim.
In a press release proffered by the City of Boerne, it was noted that the man, "complained of being hot and entered the water to cool down," before encountering a sudden drop-off in the lake's depth. The subsequent struggle sent him shouting for help below the surface, in a tragic scenario that unveils the unseen hazards lurking in the seemingly tranquil city lake.
Efforts to recover the man commenced yesterday with sonar tech playing a critical role in the operation, the body was eventually located in a section of the lake with depths ranging between 8-10 feet. Officials have stated that alcohol was not a factor in the incident, a fact that starkly reminds us that even sober judgment can falter in the face of nature's unpredictability.
After the recovery, Boerne City Lake, a popular spot for local anglers and recreationists alike, was reopened to the public. The city has yet to announce any safety measures or advisories in the wake of the drowning.
