Gunmen are at large after a man was left shot over a satchel that turned out to be an empty haul in Houston's Montrose neighborhood, authorities said. In what amounted to a violent mugging gone south, the Houston Police Department reported that around 1 a.m. Tuesday, a man in his 50s was accosted and subsequently robbed by two armed assailants on Westheimer and Ridgewood, according to KTRK.
The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, attempted to follow the suspects to presumably explain that his satchel was empty of valuables. Lt. JP Horelica with HPD noted the desperate scenario, detailing how the victim pleaded with the gunmen before one of them ultimately decided to cease listening and instead shot the man in the leg. Afterward, the suspects were seen fleeing the scene in a light-colored vehicle, as stated in a report obtained by KTRK.
An investigation is ongoing to apprehend the two suspects, described as younger Hispanic males, who committed the robbery and subsequent shooting. According to FOX 26 Houston, witnesses or individuals with information regarding the incident have been urged to come forward and contact HPD’s Robbery Division or Crime Stoppers. The victim was transported to a local hospital and is expected to recover.
As the perpetrators remain at large, HPD has yet to release additional details regarding the suspects' identities.
