In a bid to draw back its budget-conscious customers, McDonald's is mulling over the introduction of a new $5 value meal across the nation's outlets. A source in the know revealed to CBS MoneyWatch that the proposed combo might consist of either a McChicken, a McDouble, or a four-piece chicken nuggets, complemented with fries and a drink.
While McDonald's is no stranger to offering budget-friendly meals, this move is seen as a strategic effort to recapture the loyalty of diners who have been tightening their belts in the face of inflationary pressures. The Dallas Express reported that the renowned fast-food chain has noted reduced traffic from customers earning $45,000 or less. An earnings call last month had Chris Kempczinski, McDonald's CEO, pointing out "broad-based consumer pressures persist around the world," according to Fox 4 KDFW.
The burgeoning prices in the fast-food sector have nudged consumers – wearied by inflation – to reconsider their dine-out habits, as chains like McDonald's and Subway have escalated their menu prices to offset soaring labor and ingredient costs. In a statement on an April 30 earnings call gleaned by CBS MoneyWatch, Kempczinski emphasized the essentiality of keeping prices affordable to persuade customers to frequent McDonald's once more, saying, "it's imperative that we continue to keep affordability at the forefront for our customers."
Meanwhile, McDonald's has been aggressive with its pricing strategy. Over the past decade, the chain raised its menu prices more than any of its fast-food rivals, per FinanceBuzz. A January poll by consulting firm Revenue Management Solutions indicated around 25% of people making under $50,000 are cutting back on fast food, citing cost as the concern. In a separate endeavor, McDonald's inaugurated a beverage-centric restaurant named CosMc, with plans to open additional outlets in Texas.
While the concept of a wallet-friendly combo is not novel in the fast food landscape – Wendy's has been there with its 4 for $4 deal since 2015 – the potential introduction of the $5 value meal signifies the heavyweight's acknowledgment of the necessity to adapt to shifting consumer behavior. The Dallas Express cites that, as of February 2023, Dallas hosts 56 McDonald's restaurants, which, while not matching Houston's 126, demonstrates the brand's significant presence in urban centers.
Employing over 2 million people in its restaurants and another 150,000 in corporate positions, McDonald's stands as the nation's largest fast-food player. The vast majority of the chain's eateries are owned and operated by franchisees, whose involvement is key in the deliberations about executing the $5 meal plan.
