Revellers planning to kick off Cinco de Mayo with a cold cerveza or a Margarita, take note: Mesa Police Department will be watching the roads this weekend with a hawk's eye for any sign of DUI activity. The department's Traffic Unit is boosting its presence from May 3 through May 5 as part of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) Cinco de Mayo DUI Task Force, according to a statement on the city's website.

Officers will be on duty for extended hours, from early evening until the dead of night - specifically 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. The task force is no stranger to holidays; it's an annual operation that Police say is aimed at snagging impaired drivers off the streets, to, cut down on drunk-driving related mishaps and keep the festivities from turning fatal.

In an effort to avoid a collision with consequences that can't be undone, the Mesa Police Department urges everyone to celebrate with a sense of duty to their community. They're encouraging party-goers to plan ahead for a sober ride home, whether it means designating a driver who stays on the water or cashing in on a ride-share service.

If locals spot someone who appears to be driving recklessly, possibly under the influence, the department wants you to play a part in keeping the streets safe, They're asking you to not hesitate - call their non-emergency line at 480-644-2211 to report suspect drivers. The message is simple and straightforward: Enjoy the holiday, but do it without endangering lives.
