Boston's famed RR Auction is hosting a "Marvels of Modern Music" sale, featuring over 300 pieces of music memorabilia that are sure to evoke nostalgia and spur spending. The auction, closing on May 23, is highlighted by a slice of rock history—an "exceedingly rare" original abstract painting by Bob Dylan and an original recording of Jimi Hendrix playing with Little Richard, among other significant items. According to Boston.com, the Dylan painting, dating back to 1968, could fetch a cool $100,000, while the Hendrix tape is estimated to sell for $40,000.
Music lovers and collectors have an opportunity to virtually meet and possibly even own a piece of their idols' past. RR Auction boasts an impressive track record of high-profile sales, including astronaut Wally Schirra's commemorative watch, which sold for $1.9 million, and Steve Jobs's Apple-1 Computer Prototype, which sold for $677,196. The RR Auction website details the auction house's history of selling rare and historic artifacts, valued for their authenticity and provenance.
The gem of the auction is the vibrant Dylan artwork, given in exchange for an astrology chart, described on RR Auction's website as signed faintly on the reverse, ‘Bob Dylan,’ with musical notes sketched below. Fascinatingly, this piece remained in the hands of the family of Sandy LePanto since its creation. And for hard-core Johnny Cash fans, his black Nudie Suit with navy blue embroidered moons and stars, dating back to 1977, could be a cherished acquisition, estimated at $6,000. This comes after a handbill from a 1965 Bob Dylan concert was pegged at $400 as well.
The auction isn't just limited to these headline-grabbing pieces. Beatles devotees could snap up a signed Magical Mystery Tour EP or a 1964 signed hotel menu from New Zealand, with estimates of $30,000 and $5,000 respectively. Other eclectic items include Amy Winehouse's negligee, a pink guitar signed by Taylor Swift, and Prince's stage-used grand piano from his "Piano & a Microphone Tour," to potentially grab at an estimated $200,000. These pieces embody the eras and icons of a generation, inviting fans to hold a tangible piece of music royalty.
RR Auction's approach is a meticulous one, with items thoroughly vetted by experts to ensure authenticity. In the industry for over 45 years, they have cemented their reputation by consistently delivering artifacts of cultural and historical significance across various domains. The rarity of these pieces cannot be understated—echoing the narratives of musicians who have, across the twentieth century and into our present day, shaped the contours of our sonic landscape.
