Reports from AAA Michigan suggest a staggering 1.3 million residents in the state are ready to hit the roads, skies, and other means of transport to kick off their summer. According to The Detroit News, this figure not only surpasses the pre-pandemic era but also marks it as the second-highest travel forecast since the start of the new millennium.
The exodus includes approximately 1.17 million people planning road trips and over 69,000 flying. Ready to brave the busiest road, eastbound I-94 between Kalamazoo and Detroit is expected to be. Meanwhile, nationwide, AAA throws out an estimate of 43.8 million Americans journeying out, which tails just behind the 2005 record of 44 million travelers, as stated by WXYZ.
Although such mobility heralds a return to normative summer excitement, fuel prices weigh heavily on travelers' minds. An average of $3.64 per gallon is what Michigan drivers are currently paying for gas, up from $3.60 on the previous Memorial Day, as per Detroit Free Press. AAA spokesperson Adrienne Woodland mentioned that if the burgeoning demand falls in line with the rising supply, there's a chance gas prices could see a decline.
While Michigan observes an uptick in prices, the national average tells a different story, showing a decrease to $3.58 per gallon, according to GasBuddy. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, provided insight to The Detroit News, stating, “With gas prices now nearing a 10-cent drop to the high we saw a few weeks ago, the future looks good as we get closer to Memorial Day; price drops could potentially accelerate after last week’s jobs data shows the economy continues to cool off.” Time will tell if Michiganders can expect a similar reprieve as the holiday unfolds.
