A slice of the Big Apple's nightlife is set to shake things up in East Austin come fall. Mother's Ruin, a New York dive-meets-cocktail bar, is primed to debut at 1401 East Sixth Street, bringing a dash of its revered boozy slushies and American eats to the Lone Star State's capital. Housed in Centro's mixed-use development, this latest outpost is a continuation of the Mother's Ruin legacy, which already boasts spots in Manhattan, Nashville, and Chicago.
Known for its casual yet stylish ambiance, Mother's Ruin has rapidly become a favorite among locals and visitors alike, establishing a reputation for quality drinks and comfort food. According to Austin Eater, the bar's move to Austin was confirmed by co-founder Richard Knapp and is set to potentially include concoctions inspired by the region alongside their classic fare. Mother's Ruin first poured its soul into the Manhattan bar scene in 2011, branched out to Nashville in late 2019, and set up shop in Chicago in 2022.
The food and drink menu at Mother's Ruin doesn't hold back. Patrons can expect fiercely flavorful items such as waffle fries spiced with Old Bay seasoning, enticing cheeseburgers, and hot sauce-honey chicken wings. The breakfast burritos and French toast sticks serve to satiate those craving brunch, which is a daily affair. This all pairs neatly with a frozen bourbon slushie or a pickleback shot, as noted by its existing menus.
Moreover, MySA reports that the Austin venue will be tailored by local firm Logan Architecture, with construction scheduled to begin in July and wrapped up by December 1, perfectly in time to cater to holiday revelers. Not to just stick out like a sore thumb, the bar will settle nicely into a community of businesses at Centro development, already home to the likes of Brooklyn Dumpling Shop.
While Mother’s Ruin has not yet released official statements about its specific menu for the Austin location, history suggests that guests might be in for a few Texas twists on their well-loved offerings. The Austin insertion of the Mother’s Ruin universe underscores an ongoing narrative: New York-based establishments finding fertile ground in Austin's vibrant landscape—a trend shown by the arrival of such spaces as the retro-styled bar the Flower Shop, scheduled to bloom on East Seventh Street this summer.
