It was a day of celebration in Northeast Philadelphia as city officials, including Councilmember Brian J. O'Neill, and residents came together for the grand opening of the newly revamped Pelbano Recreation Center. The site, settled in the heart of the 10th Council District, boasts a $1.3 million makeover courtesy of the city's Rebuild program, a pivotal investment in refurbishing public spaces. As summer looms, the Pelbano's facelift introduces an interactive playground, spruced-up basketball courts, and updated equipment for community enjoyment.
"Our Capital Program Office through the work of Rebuild is delivering on my Administration’s promise to bring high-quality parks and playgrounds to communities across our city and we are excited to see the completed renovations at Pelbano," Mayor Cherelle L. Parker stated in a press release. She highlighted the center's role in fostering active and outdoor lifestyles for Philly's youth. Councilmember O’Neill echoed the sentiment, stressing his commitment "in supplying our communities with high quality recreational spaces." Thanks to the Rebuild initiative, the Rhawnhurst neighborhood now has a renovated outdoor space, set to be a staple well beyond this summer.
The ceremony marked the completion of the venue's renovations and paid homage to George C. Pelbano, a staunch community supporter and namesake of the center. Pelbano, who managed the Rhawnhurst Athletic Association for four decades, was remembered for contributing to youth sports. The modern upgrades at the Recreation Center align with its mission of enhancing community engagement and honoring Pelbano's legacy.
Among the improvements are a fresh sprayground, a new playground aimed at appealing to all generations, and a multipurpose court complete with a walking/tricycle loop suitable for volleyball and various sports. Director of the Capital Program Office Aparna Palantino conveyed her enthusiasm for the space’s ability via the city's press release "to promote active lifestyles for today’s youth and the generations to come." She emphasized the importance of continued investments in green, clean, and safe community spaces that nurture creativity and unity.
Fulfilling the city's commitment to equitable rec spaces, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Commissioner Susan Slawson celebrated the center's upgrades, asserting, "Thanks to the City’s capital investments through the Rebuild program, we’re able to continue to provide quality programming and safe recreational spaces to Philadelphians regardless of zip code." These sentiments and more information on the project are detailed on the City of Philadelphia's official website.
