In a bid to foster connection across communities, LA County Library, in partnership with the Los Angeles Public Library, is set to launch 'One Book, One County,' slated to be the largest book club in L.A. Starting from June 1 and running through July 27, the initiative invites the whopping 9.8 million L.A. County residents to read and discuss María Amparo Escandón's New York Times bestseller, "L.A. Weather." "One Book, One County is a testament to the power that books have to unite communities. By reading and discussing L.A. Weather together, we hope to foster a sense of shared experience and understanding across our diverse county," LA County Library Director Skye Patrick said, according to a press release.
The selected book delves into the lives of the Alvarado family battling personal storms in Los Angeles, an apt metaphor for the city's eclectic nature, and the unpredictable weather patterns that mirror the character's inner tumults. Escandón, the author, expressed her honor at the novel being chosen for the reading program, "What better way to pay homage to our public libraries, to books, and to the stories that we can relate to than to come together as a community and read with one another?" she told LA County Library.
Key events include a kickoff on June 1 where unlimited eBook and audiobook copies of "L.A. Weather" will be made accessible via the Libby app by OverDrive. On July 27, a grand celebration at Gloria Molina Grand Park will close the program, featuring an author talk with Escandón, live music, and community activities. The event caters to the diverse slices of the community pie, stitching together the social fabric with each page turned, each discussion engaged.
Participating in this literary soiree are 18 library systems, ranging from Beverly Hills Public Library to the Santa Monica Public Library, which the press release names in full. This collaborative effort is underpinned by support from numerous stakeholders, including the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the Library Foundation of Los Angeles, with a shared vision of galvanizing a county-wide conversation. For further details on the reading program, literary enthusiasts and community participants can visit the official LA County Library website or the Los Angeles Public Library's dedicated one book page.
A reflection of the highest honor for library service that both the LA County Library and the Los Angeles Public Library have received, this program is a clear demonstration of their ongoing commitment to promoting literacy, amplifying diverse voices, and providing a gateway to free and fruitful information for all. An ambition not just to entertain, but to enlighten, to bridge divides and celebrate the narrative collage that is Los Angeles, this community-wide read-along stands as a pillar of cultural engagement and a beacon of shared experiences in a city known for its sprawling vastness and social segmentation.
