In a recent crackdown on gang activity, Oxnard Police Department's Special Enforcement Unit caught and arrested two 14-year-old boys on firearms violations. The arrests took place on the evening of May 30th in the back alleys of the 4900 block of Olds Road, a known hotspot for local gang activity, the department revealed in a news release.
The operation, which was orchestrated to directly target known gang members, quickly escalated as the two juveniles attempted to hastily flee from officers but were soon caught following a short pursuit. Each juvenile was found to be in possession of a loaded handgun; one had an untraceable 'ghost gun' model known as a Polymer 80, while the other held an unregistered 9-millimeter, further intensifying concerns over youth access to firearms in the area.
Sergeant Bakari Myers disclosed that the Polymer 80 is a particularly troubling find as it is sold commercially in an incomplete form and needs to be manufactured further to become a functioning firearm. "The Polymer 80 handgun was equipped with a threaded barrel," Myers explained, elaborating that such a feature allows for potentially more deadly modifications, qualifying it as an "assault weapon" under Californian law.
Neither of the apprehended teens resided at the complex where they were arrested, suggesting they may have been there solely for the purpose of possibly convening with others or conducting illegal activities. Following their capture, the juveniles were transported straight to the Juvenile Justice Center. The Oxnard Police are making concerted efforts to not only curb crime but also to seize illegal firearms and to firmly discourage the spread of gang influence in the city.
As part of their ongoing commitment to enhance community safety, the Oxnard Police Department is actively encouraging anyone with information on this case or related criminal conduct to step forward. Contacts are welcomed via their website or through Ventura County Crime Stoppers, where tips can be submitted anonymously if desired. The fight against gang-related violence and illegal arms continues to be a focal point for law enforcement as they strategize to reduce such incidents in Oxnard.
