Houston authorities are on the hunt for a hit-and-run driver after a deadly crash on the Katy Freeway late Tuesday evening left one man dead. The tragic incident occurred near 3400 Katy Freeway (West Interstate Highway 10) around 8:35 p.m., where a 41-year-old male motorcyclist collided with the rear of a dark-colored SUV, Houston police reported.
The man, whose name has yet to be released pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, was operating a red Harley Davidson Softail and was thrown onto the freeway lanes in the crash's aftermath. Tragically, he was then struck by a red Honda Accord, which was also traveling westbound. The driver of the SUV did not stop quickly to provide assistance, fleeing the scene instead, according to statements obtained by city officials.
The driver of the Honda Accord, however, did stop and remained at the scene, cooperating with the subsequent investigation. Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived shortly thereafter and pronounced the motorcyclist deceased on the scene. As per the official report, Sergeant D. Rose and Officer J. Best from HPD Vehicular Crimes Division are leading the ongoing investigation into this fatal series of events.
Police are now urgently reaching out to the public for assistance in locating the individual responsible for this hit-and-run. Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding the driver of the dark-colored SUV involved to come forward. They could contact the HPD Hit and Run Unit directly at 713-247-4065 or, to remain anonymous, provide tips via Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS, as urged in the public statement.
