In a twist that reads like a procedural crime drama, Sean Briseno, a 40-year-old convict from Port Hueneme, found himself back in handcuffs after deputies discovered a loaded firearm in his vehicle, parked on the lot of the very courthouse where he was attending a hearing for another pending criminal matter. Ventura County Sheriff's Office deputies, in coordination with the West County Special Enforcement Unit, detained Briseno at the Ventura County Superior Court on April 19, according to the Ventura County Sheriff's Office.
The arrest was part of a broader crackdown on illegal firearm possession by the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, which has noted an uptick in "ghost guns" – untraceable weapons with no serial numbers – cropping up within the county. The investigation into Briseno by the West County Special Enforcement Unit (WC-SEU) led to the discovery of not just one, but multiple firearms, as well as a stash of suspected methamphetamine. This collection of contraband landed Briseno with various firearm, ammunition, and narcotics charges, as reported by the Ventura County Sheriff's Office.
The initial reason for Briseno's courthouse visit now seems minuscule compared to the serious felony charges piled up against him after these discoveries. His bail is set at $70,000, and as the investigation continues, Briseno could be staring down the barrel of a significant prison term if convicted.
The case against Briseno was formally presented to the Ventura County District Attorney's Office on April 23, and multiple felony counts were filed. These charges include felonies with a Firearm and possession of a Controlled Substance with a Firearm, as per the Ventura County Sheriff's Office.
Concerned citizens with information about illegal firearm activities are encouraged to contact WC-SEU Senior Deputy Matt Smith at 805-677-8771. Meanwhile, Ventura County Crime Stoppers is offering up to $1,000 for tips leading to arrests in such cases. For the community, the significant rewards aren't just monetary, they're measured in safety and peace of mind.
