President Joe Biden made a firm stand on the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, voicing support and solidarity with the LGBTQI+ communities globally. In his statement on the White House website, Biden called the fight for LGBTQI+ rights "a matter of human rights, plain and simple." He highlighted his administration's commitment to this cause by recognizing contributions made by LGBTQI+ individuals and urging an end to discrimination and violence against them.
Since the inception of his term, the President has been proactive in this arena, signing a Presidential Memorandum aimed at promoting the human rights of LGBTQI+ Persons internationally and outlawing the harmful practice of "conversion therapy." Biden's administration has also been involved in protecting LGBTQI+ refugees and confronting gender-based violence by launching an inclusive strategy that takes into account the unique risks these communities face.
Efforts under Biden's administration have borne fruit, as he asserts they have combated abuses against LGBTQI+ populations abroad and have worked to make sure that these individuals are not overlooked in foreign assistance programs. Biden appointed a Special Envoy to Advance the Human Rights of LGBTQI+ Persons and has been influential in responding to anti-LGBTQI+ legislation across the globe. He credited American leadership with a shift toward decriminalizing same-sex conduct in several countries.
However, Biden acknowledged that the battle for equality is far from over. "LGBTQI+ communities around the world still face hate-fueled violence and discrimination," he stated via the White House website release, calling for equality in basic human rights like healthcare and employment. Commemorating the 30th anniversary since the World Health Organization removed 'homosexuality' from its list of mental disorders, Biden noted it as a milestone in the ongoing struggle for LGBTQI+ rights, praising the progress made thus far while recognizing the journey ahead.
In closing, the President reaffirmed his administration's dedication to championing LGBTQI+ rights both at home and abroad, asserting the importance of fighting against all forms of hate-driven violence.
