A tense confrontation between San Antonio police officers and a suspect in a stolen vehicle ended with the suspect being shot in the head, authorities said. The shooting took place yesterday evening on the city's far northwest side, as officers were initially called to an apartment complex for an unrelated incident involving marijuana use, according to KENS 5.
Upon identifying the stolen car, the two officers positioned their vehicle nearby in an attempt to block it in and proceeded to locate the individual involved with the initial call. It was then, police say, that the suspect returned to the stolen car and, finding it blocked, attempted to escape by driving over a curb. San Antonio Police Chief William McManus stated that the officers "opened fire, because they were in the path of the vehicle," which had been allegedly driving towards them, as News 4 San Antonio reported.
The suspect, whose identity and condition remain undisclosed, was hit once in the head and was subsequently rushed to a local hospital. The circumstances that led to the officers discharging their weapons are under investigation.
The officers involved in the shooting, both relatively new to the force with about a year's experience, were not harmed during the incident. Following standard procedure, they have been placed on administrative duty while the investigation proceeds. This latest shooting adds to the tally of officer-involved shootings in San Antonio for the year, now standing at 11. Police continue to piece together the facts surrounding this case, seeking clarity on the sequence of events that led to another human being shot in the maelstrom of law and order, the KENS 5 concludes.
