San Marcos is set to feature the latest in micro-living with the introduction of a new community comprising over 200 "micro homes." According to KXAN, this project, spearheaded by Austin-based startup Casata, plans to deliver a range of 210 homes from 500 to 800 square feet, aiming to address the city’s growing affordability crisis.
Innovation in housing is the central theme of Casata San Marcos, with home sizes varying between 512 and 806 square feet, and the development touting technological advancements and energy-efficient living, Aaron Levy, Casata CEO remarked on the quality of life benefits these types of homes promise, stating, “You’re not sharing walls, not sharing corridors or stairs to get to your home – you pull up to your home that is your home,” which was supported by residents in South Austin who have shown a similar affinity for smaller living spaces after the opening of a 60 micro home development there in 2021.
Apart from tackling the need for housing, the Casata San Marcos development, which broke ground on May 14 is positioned to enhance the community with amenities such as several dog parks, acres of trails, a pool, and a gym, as per Aaron Levy's statements obtained by Community Impact.
San Marcos has not been immune to the soaring housing prices affecting much of the Interstate 35 corridor, and developments like Casata are being welcomed by local officials as a relief to this issue, Page Michel, the President & CEO of the San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce, told KXAN, “We have in San Marcos a higher poverty rate than other communities on the corridor between Austin and San Antonio,” adding “Both renters and homeowners will find a lack of Supply in their range.” With the housing market in a crunch, Casata is planning expansions beyond San Marcos, plotting additional communities in Bastrop and College Station, signaling a burgeoning market for compact and affordable living solutions.
