In a shocking incident of violence on the streets of Santa Monica, a homeless man has been taken into custody after assaulting an elderly woman. The Santa Monica Police Department told FOX LA that the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Jalan Rodger James, attacked a 73-year-old woman on May 23 near the 1600 block of Ocean Front Walk.
The victim was reportedly enjoying her morning walk when she encountered James. As he moved incoherently yelling, she attempted to avoid him but was allegedly pushed forcefully to the ground. The battery resulted in a back injury and hand abrasions for the elderly woman. The Santa Monica Police later nabbed James near 2nd and Colorado following reports of him attempting to punch other bystanders.
James is now facing several charges including felony battery with serious bodily injury and elder abuse. The Santa Monica Government reported that the case has been forwarded to the Los Angeles County District Attorney, enhanced by witness statements and video evidence.
"The safety and well-being of our most vulnerable residents is a top priority for the SMPD. Assaults on elderly individuals are taken very seriously, and we will continue to pursue felony charges in these situations," stated Chief Ramon Batista. James' arrest is not an isolated incident, as he faces additional charges in another assault case pending a review by the District Attorney. SMPD urges anyone harmed by or with information on this suspect to come forward.
