The Detroit Zoo is preparing to part ways with one of its beloved residents, Simba the lion. After gracing the Michigan institution for over a decade, Simba is slated for a move to Great Plains Zoo in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, as per reports from ClickOnDetroit. While the exact departure date remains under wraps, it's been confirmed that Simba will be heading off "in the near future" to prowl within a sprawling, newly minted habitat designed specifically for him.
During his tenure at the Detroit Zoo, not only did Simba charm visitors, but also sired a cub named Binti, leaving his legacy on the zoo's pride. According to a WWJ Newsradio report, the zoo expressed their sentiments in a Facebook post, asking fans to send off Simba with best wishes either in person or through sharing their memories and snapshots on social media. The Great Plains Zoo awaits him with open paws, ready to provide "the highest level of care" and continue his role as an ambassador for his species.
This farewell comes on the heels of last summer's departure of three gorillas who called the Detroit Zoo home for 20 years. Like the gorillas before him, Simba's relocation is under the guiding hand of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, aiming to bolster a genetically diverse lion population across zoos, as noted by Patch. The association heralds such moves as critical for the sustainability and health of the species in managed care.
The Detroit Zoo acknowledged the mixed feelings surrounding Simba's exodus. In a statement obtained by Patch, officials shared, "Though we will miss him dearly, we know he will receive the highest level of care in his new home and continue to be a fantastic ambassador for African lions in the wild." Despite the zoo's heavy heart, Simba's legacy at the Detroit Zoo with Binti will remain. He undeniably made an incredible impact on our hearts.
