Philadelphia police arrested a suspect for the assault and robbery of an off-duty officer's firearm, occurring early Sunday morning in North Philadelphia. The CBS Philadelphia report detailed the ordeal, which took place just before 7:15 a.m. on the 2100 block of West Oxford Street. Hours after fleeing the scene in a black BMW that struck the officer, the suspect was apprehended in the area of Kensington.
During the unsettling encounter, as explained by police, the off-duty officer disarmed the suspect, who, in retaliation, struck him with a car. The suspect's vehicle was later lost by law enforcement near 9th and Cumberland streets before the suspect was taken into custody. It's reported by CBS Philadelphia that the officer managed to fire his weapon in self-defense during the incident.
The search is not over, however. Police are now looking for several women believed to have intervened while the officer tried to detain the suspect. According to NBC10 Philadelphia, the additional suspects are suspected female co-defendants who assisted in the initial getaway of the suspect. The stolen officer's weapon has not yet been recovered, and the pursuit of these females is part of an active police investigation.
Authorities have released images of individuals linked to the crime in a continuation of the manhunt. As reported by 6ABC, while the images were shared, the officers did not explain how they were connected to the attack. The Philadelphia Police Department continues its call for the local community's assistance in tracking the elusive suspects.
