Teen Driver Crashes Into Macomb County Sheriff's Patrol Car on I-94 Near DetroitSource: Macomb County Sheriff's Office

Out of the night and into a nightmare: an 18-year-old driver and his teenage passenger ended up in the hospital after slamming their car into a Macomb County Sheriff's patrol vehicle on I-94. The collision took place early Monday as the unsuspecting deputy narrowly avoided injury by leaping away in the nick of time, The Detroit News reported.

Deputy Lukas Gjelaj had been in the process of laying down flares to shut the freeway down after another crash had occurred. It was then, according to the Macomb Daily, that Gjelaj spied a white Kia Sorento hurtling towards him. The vehicle, notwithstanding the activated overhead lights on Gjelaj's car, failed to slow down and avoid crashing into the patrol car, resulting in both vehicles being totaled.

Both teens from Port Huron, the 18-year-old driver, and his 19-year-old sidekick, did not suffer any serious injuries, stated officials from the sheriff's office. Deputy Gjelaj also had to be checked out at the hospital as a precaution but fortunately sustained no grave injuries. The silver lining in this dark cloud, it seems, no drivers were impaired at the wheel, WWJ Newsradio details.

In the aftermath, the Macomb County Sheriff's Office took the opportunity to issue a reminder about Michigan's Move Over law. The law mandates that motorists quickly slow down and move over when approaching stationary authorized vehicles with flashing, rotating, or oscillating lights. If the traffic is too dense to change lanes, drivers must at least slow down below the posted speed limit by 10 mph and cautiously pass, giving the stationary vehicle as much space as possible. Authorities haven't said yet if the driver of the Kia will face any charges.
