A Friday night altercation in Monrovia turned fatal when a woman shot an armed man who reportedly violated a restraining order by appearing at her doorstep. Officials from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the man, armed with knives, attempted to stab a man and woman residing at the home on South Shamrock Avenue. The incident occurred around 9:47 p.m., with the woman firing upon the assailant to halt his advance, as KTLA reports.
Both of the occupants, a white male, and a white female, were detained for questioning but have not been charged. The identity of the deceased, an Asian male, and how he was connected to the residents have not yet been disclosed by the authorities. As per an interview with neighbor Paulette Polk by FOX LA, the woman and her teenage daughter had rented the property around six months prior.
The quiet suburb was shaken by the sound of the gunfire, as recounted by residents. "We heard just the one ‘pop’ and my wife was getting ready for bed, and she goes, ‘was that a gunshot?’ And I was like,'I think that was.' Then we saw the police cars kind of speeding past. There are nine of them, and we're like, that's not, you know, this is Monrovia and nothing happens," a neighbor detailed in statements to FOX LA.
After the shooting, the L.A. County Sheriff's Homicide Bureau took over the case, collecting several knives and a firearm from the scene. While the full circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation, authorities emphasize that this appears to be a self-defense situation. On the scene, the shock was palpable among the locals, with one finding a discarded knife on the ground. "Nothing ever happens here. And it's just so crazy that something they thought would happen. It's sad," another stunned neighbor conveyed to FOX LA.
The Sheriff's Department has encouraged anyone with information to step forward, asking witnesses to contact them at 213-229-1700 to aid in their ongoing investigation.
