According to FOX5 Atlanta, Materne, who was visiting the beach on June 5, perished after jumping into the ocean from a cliff, a known recreation activity among locals. The accident that claimed his life reportedly occurred around 4:30 p.m., with emergency personnel responding to the scene but unable to revive him.

Materne, a husband and a father, was enjoying a beach day and resting before his return to work the next day. The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office stated that, Materne was found unresponsive in the water and pronounced dead at the scene, as reported by Atlanta News First. The authorities have indicated that they do not suspect foul play in Materne's death.

In the wake of this tragedy, Materne's wife, Astrid Restrepo, has taken to GoFundMe to organize a fundraiser aimed at facilitating the transportation of her late husband’s body back to Georgia for a proper burial. "I lost my husband, the father of my daughter, and my other half," Restrepo said in a statement that can be found on the fundraising page. “But now I have to overcome this loss, bring him back home (Atlanta, GA) from California, and give him a proper burial with all the people he loved," she expressed in a statement obtained by FOX5 Atlanta.

The family hoped to raise $10,000 through the fundraiser for transporting Materne's body and covering funeral expenses. Restrepo, in her heartfelt campaign, described Materne as "an incredible father, husband, and friend," according to Atlanta News First.
