Chicago's DuSable Lake Shore Drive Lauded Among World's Most Beautiful Streets by Architectural DigestSource: Google Street View

Chicago's own DuSable Lake Shore Drive has been recognized by Architectural Digest as one of the most beautiful streets worldwide, securing the 41st spot on their list of the "71 Most Beautiful Streets in the World." The urban stretch is praised for its scenic views that pair the vastness of Lake Michigan with the city's towering skyline. Architectural Digest highlighted the drive's proximity to landmarks like Grant Park and Soldier Field, and the 18-mile Lakefront Trail, which provides a more intimate route for pedestrians to absorb the city's grandeur.

Formerly known simply as Lake Shore, the drive was renamed in 2021 to honor the city's founder, Jean Baptiste Point DuSable, a Black trader. Standing out in the ranking, while not topping it, the street's renaming pays homage to a figure whose vibrant legacy intertwines with Chicago's history.

According to a new ranking released by Condé Nast Traveller, the prettiest streets list is a mix of cobblestoned wonders and architectural marvels, with Colmar Old Town in France, Brienz, Switzerland, and Setenil de las Bodegas, Spain rounding out the top three. This varied lineup showcases streets from London to Vietnam, but includes not just traditional vistas but also less conventional beauty, such as Tehran's Tohid Tunnel with its striking symmetry set against mountain views.

All over the globe, urban tapestries are woven with streets that capture the essence of culture and place, including Chicago's 18th Street in the Pilsen neighborhood, previously acknowledged by Time Out for its placement among the world’s 30 "coolest." With a concentration of restaurants, bars, and galleries, 18th Street has also become the "main hub for the city's Mexican American community," as described by the Time Out ranking. Chicago streets, through beauty and communal spirit, have now claimed their own spotlight on the world's stage.
