The Detroit Pistons are doubling down on a much-needed refresh, snagging Trajan Langdon as their new top gun. This decisive move comes after the team's historically dismal streak, with last season's notorious 14-68 record capping off their strife. In a play to reverse fortunes, Langdon steps up to the plate as the president of basketball operations, a position left vacant since Stan Van Gundy's 2018 departure.
Langdon's recruitment, from a run with the New Orleans Pelicans as a GM, was made official Friday—a strategic pivot for an organization grasping for a win. The Pistons' owner, Tom Gores, seems convinced he's got the right man for the job, saying, "I’m confident he will very swiftly get us to the standard of excellence I expect from every business," CBS DETROIT reported.
But before Langdon can even warm his new seat, he's facing the music with the dismissal of GM Troy Weaver, who's tenure garnered mixed reviews. Despite scoring players like Cade Cunningham, Weaver's record was stamped by some notorious draft flops and disappointing player development, according to The Detroit News. The swift changeover has Langdon already scouting out additional hires for his team—a clear sign that he’s playing no games when it comes to this rebuild.
In Langdon's own words, there's work to be done, and it starts "immediately." He's vowed to dive right into preparations for the upcoming draft and to outline his strategy going forward—a necessity given the Pistons' possession of the fifth pick in a draft class that's not exactly bursting at the seams with standouts, Detroit Free Press stated.
The Pistons are indeed posing a significant question mark over the future of coach Monty Williams. With a hefty paycheck to his name and a rough start with the team, all eyes are on Langdon to make the call if Williams is still their go-to guy. Implementing his own game plan, Langdon is eying the significant cap space and the current roster—namely Cunningham, Ivey, and Thompson—as levers to leverage this team out of the gutter and into a new era of competitive play.
