Authorities announced the arrest of a woman following a concerning series of offences that occurred in Harris County last week. Deputies assigned to Constable Mark Herman's Office received a call pertaining to a vehicle accident along the Hardy Toll Road on June 7, 2024. Pursuant to their arrival at the 25700 block, they discovered the driver responsible for the accident had fled the scene. She was apprehended shortly after and identified as Andrea Bernard.
After the detention, officials described Bernard's behavior as particularly volatile. According to Constable Mark Herman's Facebook post, she "struck, kicked, spit, and defecated" on the deputies present. There were clear indications that Bernard was under the influence at the time, a suspicion further exacerbated when she later attempted to seemingly bribe a deputy with $15,000 for her release during transport for a blood warrant.
The litany of charges against Bernard includes Driving While Intoxicated, Harassment of a Public Servant, Bribery, and two counts of Failure to Stop and Render Aid. As per the information released by the Constable's office, her total bond was set at $18,100.00 by the 486th District Court.
This incident shines a spotlight on the myriad issues confronting law enforcement officials when dealing with intoxicated individuals who not only endanger public safety with irresponsible driving but further complicate matters with aggressive and illegal behavior during apprehension. Bernard's case also raises questions about the implications of attempting to improperly influence law enforcement, showcasing the lengths to which some individuals may go to evade the consequences of their actions.
