Chaos disrupted the usual Saturday night bustle in Hermosa Beach when a group of teenagers on E-bikes launched illegal fireworks into a crowd, causing injuries and panic. KTLA reported that the incident occurred near Hermosa and Pier avenues around 8:30 p.m., where the E-bike riders, who are believed to be minors, ignited the fireworks and fled into the night.
While riding away from the explosion on the beach near a lifeguard stand, the juveniles entered Pier Avenue, lined with patrons out to enjoy bars, restaurants, and shops. Scrambling after the initial explosion, several minor injuries were reported, none requiring hospitalization. Walking in the area during the disturbance, John Fahmy was hit by one of the said fireworks. "So, it hit me in the back of my head right here and partially the back of my ears," Fahmy said, as described in an NBC Los Angeles interview. "And yeah, I was just like, my ears were ringing crazy for a few minutes."
The reckless behavior of the teenagers has been a growing concern for South Bay residents. Greg, a Hermosa Beach resident, told KTLA, "Mostly what I see is [them] going at breakneck speeds and traveling in big bands," and continued saying, "It’s almost like there's that little kid energy where they don’t necessarily follow the rules." Hermosa Beach officials, in response to increasing incidents involving E-bikes, passed an emergency ordinance on June 4 aimed at regulating off-road E-bikes.
As a result of the chaos on Saturday night, police briefly detained several youths believed to be part of the incident and released them to their parents, sparking criticisms about the adequacy of the consequences faced by these juveniles. The precise identification of the person responsible for igniting the fireworks was aided by video evidence, claimed police. That juvenile, who has been implicated in the staging of the chaotic scene, remains unarrested. Even though officers believe the detained individuals weren't those firing the fireworks directly, they were engulfed in the night's turmoil.
